Western Digital Reveals World’s Highest Capacity 2.5-Inch Hard Drive
We’re all using more and more data. With photos, videos, music files and the general digital debris of everyday life, the amount of space on our computers is rarely enough Just earlier this month I reviewed a massive 8TB SSD, a capacity that was unthinkable just a few years ago.
With all the focus on Solid State Drives now, you could be forgiven for thinking that traditional spinning hard drives were a thing of the past. Not a bit of it. HDDs still have a vital role in data storage and now Western Digital has announced a new hard drive boasting the world’s highest storage capacity for a 2.5-inch portable HDD.
The WD My Passport portable HDD line, WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive and SanDisk’s Professional G-DRIVE ArmorATD will all now be available in maximum 6TB capacities.
According to Nitin Kachhwaha, Western Digital’s director of product management: “Expanding our portfolio with the world’s first 2.5-inch 6TB portable hard drive is an incredible technological achievement, and it enables us to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
“Offering up to 6TB in such a small form factor and accessible price point gives everyone—from students, gamers, professional videographers, and more—greater flexibility to create and keep even more of their essential content in one portable drive.”
The new, record-busting 6TB capacity in such a physically small HDD is available across Western Digital’s range and means that consumers, gamers and creative professionals can access more space on the move.
With up to 6TB now available on the WD My Passport hard drive lineup, it’s possible for consumers to store more and back up their digital memories with ease. The My Passport Ultra drive has sold millions of units across the world. The drives have a USB-C interface and our housed in a robust metal case. The slim form factor is easily carried and the drive includes software for password protection with 256-bit AES hardware encryption to help keep content private and secure.
Pricing & Availability: My Passport hard drives are available in a variety of different colors. The new 6TB WD My Passport Ultra retails for £199.99 / $199.99. A Mac version of the 6TB WD My Passport Ultra for Apple Mac retails for $199.99 / £204.99. The non-ultra 6TB WD My Passport for Mac sells for $199.99 / £165.99.
Also announced today is the new WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive designed for gamers to use with their console or PC. The drive has performance-enhancing tools for today’s complex AAA titles. For example, the 6TB WD_BLACK P10 can store up to 150 games. The drive is aimed at gamers who want to upgrade the storage of their console or PC without having to delete games or forgo any updates to make room for new titles.

Finally, SanDisk Professional’s G-DRIVE ArmorATD drive, the rugged all-terrain storage with built-in shock resistance, IP54 rain and dust rating and crush resistance to help protect valuable footage also gets the 6TB treatment.
The 6TB SanDisk Professional G-DRIVE ArmorATD provides a portable way to back up photos, video footage and files wherever creativity strikes, including on location. The G-DRIVE lineup has proven popular with film units for recording precious takes that can’t be repeated.
