William Floyd Middle School eighth grader Muhammad Rayyan Umair recently competed in the World Scholar’s Cup (WSC), a non-traditional academic competition that celebrates the joy of learning. Muhammad participated in the WSC “Toronto-ish” regional event held at the Cobourg Collegiate Institute in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada, and won first place! With this victory, Muhammad has qualified for the next round and will compete in Dubai, United Arab Emirates in December! Congratulations, Muhammad, and good luck in Dubai!

The World Scholar’s Cup is designed to create something different than traditional academic competitions and conferences: a celebration of the joy of learning, a tournament as rewarding for the team that came in last as the for the team that came in first, an enrichment opportunity that motivated students not just to demonstrate their existing strengths but to discover new ones.

The World Scholar’s Cup is a discussion-based, encouraging, forward-looking, inclusive, interdisciplinary, team-oriented and whimsical event, with the goals of motivating students of all backgrounds to discover new strengths and practice new skills, as well as to inspire a community of future scholars and leaders.
