What Bally Sports Ohio broadcasters said during Reds-Blue Jays about Joey Votto retiring

Joey Votto’s retirement announcement drew reactions during Bally Sports Ohio’s broadcast of the Cincinnati Reds‘ series finale against the Blue Jays in Toronto from John Sadak, Chris Welsh and Jim Day.

“Certainly one of the most unique players, perhaps the most unique player I have ever covered,” Day said during the broadcast. “And it was a pleasure all those years. Joey Votto, from Reds fans, thank you. … Joey Votto, a storied career has come to an end.”

“All the best to Joey, as the Reds are here in Toronto,” Sadak added. “It feels full circle in some ways. And that man made for a lot of highlight moments, and for a generation of Red fans, he was the face of the franchise.”

“And he was a Reds type of player too,” Welsh said. “Because in my mind, anyway, Joey Votto was a self-made man. He made himself into a major league hitter, and one of the best ever, by working so hard.”

“In his last game here (in Toronto), as a Red, that came a couple of years ago in the finale of that series in his return to his homeland,” Sadak said later in the broadcast. “He had the game-winning homer. In fact, he had been homerless for his first 24 games of that year. And the 8th inning, he snapped a 2-all tie with this launch that led to a 3-2 Reds win. That is his final Toronto moment.”
