What will 2025 bring for Oklahoma high school sports? We make 25 bold predictions
The upcoming year should be interesting in the Oklahoma high school sports world.
Some of the state’s top programs and athletes will try to build on their success, while others will try to make their presence known.
But things will be different in many ways with both coaches and athletes now in new places.
Here are 25 predictions for 2025 for the high school sports landscape:
1. Owasso will defend its Class 6A boys basketball state championship
The Rams have defeated some of the best teams in the nation in their early games this season. The returning talent of four-star Jalen Montonati and three-star Jax Kerr have positioned Owasso to make another run at a title.
2. Class 5A’s boys basketball championship will be a rematch
Last time Tulsa Booker T. Washington and Midwest City faced off we saw a state title game for the ages. Midwest City is back and loaded with talent such as Deshawn Denson and Chance Davis. But with Jacques Mitchell, Barron Harris and Mason Matulis back for Tulsa Booker T. Washington, expect a rematch.
3. Lincoln Christian will claim its first girls basketball state crown
The Bulldogs have made two straight Class 4A championship appearances and lost to Bethany both times. With star junior Maddi Stewart and others back, they’ll try to win the school’s first title in girls basketball.
4. Weatherford will win its first boys basketball state title
Class 4A will likely be the most competitive class in basketball. However, the Eagles, led by OU football signee CJ Nickson, Ethan Sage and Piedmont transfer Walker Kennedy, pose as the early favorites to get over the hump.
5. Millwood will claim the Class 3A boys basketball state crown
Millwood lost to OCS by five points in the state title game a year ago. But with OCS graduating three-star Luke Gray and Millwood guards Isaiah Wilks and Amari Barrett emerging, the Falcons will have a strong shot at winning their third title since 2022.
6. Washington girls basketball will get over the hump
The Warriors have lost in the Class 3A state title game in two straight seasons but were young. With lots of experience now under their belt, they’re the frontrunners.
7. Dale will win its fourth straight Class 2A boys basketball title
It’s no secret that a shot at a Class 2A title goes through Dale. It’s been that way for three years. Even with the departure of OU guard Dayton Forsythe, his brother Denton, will lead the way now under one of the state’s best coaches in Jeff Edmondson.
8. Brandie Harrod, Allyssa Parker will lead their basketball teams to deep postseason runs
Harrod, an Auburn signee, is now at Putnam North after transferring from Millwood and has led the Panthers to a strong start to the season. Parker, an OU softball signee, led Pocola to the Class 2A state tournament last season, averaging 29.3 points per game.
9. Edmond North, Tuttle will defend their state titles in wrestling
Edmond North is the defending champion in Class 6A and coming off a historic season in which it broke several state records. Tuttle has won 16 straight Class 4A state tournament titles and 15 consecutive dual state crowns.
10. Bella Williams will become a four-time state champion
The Edmond North star is one of the best high school wrestlers in the country and quickly made a name for herself with the Huskies, going undefeated all three years.
11. Norman swimmer JD Thumann will claim two more state titles
One of the state’s top swimmers since he was a freshman, Thumann is now a junior and recently committed to Cal.
12. Stillwater will claim the Class 6A baseball state championship
The Pioneers were a game away from the Class 6A title game a year ago. Senior shortstop Ethan Holliday is the top-ranked 2025 player in the nation and will have the necessary talent around him to potentially bring Stillwater its third-ever state title.
13. Washington football will four-peat
Class 2A and 2A-I has gone through the Warriors for the past three seasons as the program is riding a 44-game win streak. Behind the returning talent of quarterback Creed Barrett and Case Alexander, expect Washington to do it again.
14. Jenks’ Semaj Stanford will be upgraded to a five-star recruit
The 5-foot-10, 165-pound safety had a stellar sophomore season and became a four-star recruit after a strong summer. He led the team in tackles and has shown instincts that indicate he’ll only get better as he continues to develop. He would be only the fifth five-star recruit in state history since that rating system was tracked by 247Sports.com.
15. Broken Arrow will win eight games under Travis Hill
Broken Arrow is in a new era with former defensive coordinator Travis Hill returning to lead the program following a short stint at Muskogee, where he won a title and lost a title game. Hill has shown his ability to rally the troops like no other, so expect him to do the same with the Tigers in his inaugural season.
16. Jordan Atkinson will remain the state’s top sprinter
An OU signee, Atkinson has won three straight Class 6A titles in the 100-meter dash and helped Mustang claim its first team championship in girls track last season.
17. Southmoore 2027 guard Tyson Pogi will be ranked nationally
Pogi, the son of former OSU quarterback Aso Pogi, is one of the state’s top guards regardless of any class. He’s poised to have a breakout sophomore season after dropping 41 points in the SaberCats’ season opener against Putnam City.
18. Choctaw football will repeat as Class 6A-II state champions
The landscape of 6A-II will drastically change with Muskogee losing seniors Jamarian Ficklin and PJ Wallace. The defending champion Yellowjackets are primed as the early favorites to repeat with players such as Landon Gatson, Mayor Morgan and Da’Jon Green returning.
19. Tuttle will make it back to the Class 4A football state title game
Class 4A was the most competitive football classification this season. Expect Tuttle to run back its success with star talent such as Cruz Campbell and Shawn Rounsaville returning to lead the way.
20. Edmond Memorial will repeat as the Class 6A volleyball champion
The Bulldogs finished strong this past season and were led by a pair of stellar juniors in Texas A&M commit Lolufe Adedeji and Central Arkansas commit Annie Hopkins.
21. Fort Cobb-Broxton will defend its Class B Baseball title
Hard to go against the Mustangs. They’ve won spring titles in three out of the last four seasons and have one of the nation’s top players in senior Eli Willits.
22. Dale will win the Class 2A-I baseball title
The Pirates nearly won the Class 2A fall baseball title, making it to the title game and losing to Silo, which competes in Class 3A during the spring.
23. Ethan Holliday, Eli Willits will be top 10 picks in the MLB Draft
Holliday, a standout at Stillwater who is the son of former MLB All-Star Matt Holliday and brother of No. 1 pick Jackson Holliday, is the top 2025 draft prospect, according to MLB.com. Willits, a star out of Fort-Cobb-Broxton who is the son of former MLB outfielder Reggie Willits, is No. 11.
24. Wagoner’s Juliana Hutchens will lead the state in home runs again
Nicknamed Goose, the catcher is one of the best players in the country. She aims to repeat her success from this past season as a sophomore when she hit 23 home runs and batted .656.
25. Lone Grove will repeat as Class 3A softball champions
The program has won three of the last four state titles in the class and has shown no signs of slowing down. As long as right-hand pitcher Braylee Spence is in the circle alongside Hunter Gardner and Jesse Shuman, Lone Grove will be in the running.
