What’s going on there? It will bring 240 jobs to this Grand Rapids suburb

WYOMING, MI – People driving on 36th Street just before U.S. 131 will notice workers raising steel for a new development on the site of a former GM plant.

It’s one of three developments planned for the former automotive plant’s site that covers 75 acres.

Corewell Health in April revealed an $80 million planned “consolidated service center” at 300 36th St. SW that would bring 240 jobs to Wyoming.

A representative from Corewell Health recently told MLive/the Grand Rapids Press that the center is still in early stages of construction and did not give a date of completion. Jobs at the site will be a combination of relocated and newly created jobs.

The 296,515-square-foot development includes a distribution center, document and mail services, offices for supply chain staff, dedicated parking for Corwell’s lab courier fleet, electric vehicle charging stations and 36,000 square feet of shell space.

The center will be located on the north portion of a property that formerly was home to the GM stamping plant which closed in 2009.

Corewell purchased the northern 40 acres of the site from Franklin Site 36 LLC for $6.6 million in December 2023, according to property records.

As part of the consolidated service center project, Corewell plans to build a pedestrian trail on the east side of the property along Buchanan Avenue SW that will be transferred to the city of Wyoming.

That trail will connect to the planned city marketplace north of the Corewell property, which is expected to open in early 2025, as well as Godwin High School and another trail along the northern edge of the marketplace property.

The $4.5 million marketplace will have 24 flexible vendor stalls, storage space, restrooms and more, and will serve as a market for farmers and artisans, a gathering space for the community and a place for food trucks and entertainment.
