Whitman Fire Department Responds to an Unknown Odor at Local Business

For immediate release

WHITMAN — Chief Timothy Clancy and the Whitman Fire Department reports that there is no danger to the public after crews responded Friday night to a hazardous materials call.

At 8:48 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, firefighters received a call about an undetermined odor at Venus Pizza, 47 South Ave. Upon arrival, crews searched the premises and smelled a strong odor originating from the basement and the bathroom. The business was then evacuated.

The Tier 1 haz mat team was summoned to the scene. It found elevated readings of an unknown substance. The building was ventilated, reducing the odor. The owner is working with the Board of Health and other town agencies on the issue.

Six people were evaluated at the scene. Four declined treatment, and two were transported by ambulance to a local hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.
