Why Missouri’s sports gambling vote count led to some confusion

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Missouri’s Amendment 2, which legalizes sports gambling, narrowly passed.

Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft’s office acknowledged confusion in counting votes. Election officials say a couple of counties made mistakes when entering the numbers on Tuesday. The secretary of state’s office fixed those mistakes on Wednesday. However, those changes did not impact its passage.

Although the the count is ongoing, Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft said the lead in favor of sports gambling likely will not change.

“We haven’t certified everything, but looking at it right now,” said Ashcroft. “We’re dealing with fewer than 10,000 votes difference. I wouldn’t expect to see anywhere near that magnitude of change in either direction as we go through the certification process. That would just be an incredibly large thing.”

Ashcroft says his office has until the second week of December to certify the results.
