Louisville Police officers detained and handcuffed top golfer Scottie Scheffler outside Valhalla Golf Club on Friday ahead of the second round of the PGA Championship. He was arrested after allegedly trying to drive around traffic controls near the golf club. In a series of bizarre incidents, the police officers took Scheffler into custody, booked him with a mugshot taken in an orange jumpsuit, released him and then took him back to the course for breakfast and practice.

How was Scheffler detained?

The golf world number one was detained by Louisville Metro police when he drove onto curbing to try and get around an accident at the entrance of the golf course, one that resulted in the fatality of a pedestrian. He was charged with assault on a police officer, criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic. However, he was released on his recognizance.

Scottie Scheffler: Chaotic situation

In a statement released after the incident Scheffler said, “This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do.

10th Tee gets delayed

The two-time Masters champion golfer arrived at Valhalla’s clubhouse about 30 minutes after his release and just under an hour before his start time off the 10th tee for the second round. It began after an 80-minute delay due to the accident.

Scheffler, who won his second Masters title last month, aims at becoming the first player since 2015 to win the first two majors in a calendar year.
