Wildcats Fall Sports Update (Sept. 23, 2024)

FOOTBALL

The Wildcats varsity football team had their toughest week of practice this year, preparing for the Spirit Trophy game against Goshen. The Spirit Trophy game between the two schools is New York State’s second longest running football rivalry, dating back to 1896!

The Wildcats’ hard work paid big dividends as Warwick defeated Goshen 41-18, in front of more than 3,000 people, as Wildcat Country was fired up for homecoming weekend. The Wildcats scored early and often behind, including five touchdown passes from quarterback Brody Frederick to an elite receiving core, which has earned itself the nickname “Air Warwick.”

Ryan Sullivan led all receivers with six catches for 102 yards and a touchdown, and his brother Dylan added two catches for 47 yards and a touchdown. Anthony Mazza and Dan Devine combined for 142 yards and three touchdown receptions. Air Warwick was definitely in full flight!

Junior running back Giacomo Abbate led all rushers, with 13 carries for 83 yards, as well as 68 yards on two kick-off returns. Wildcats’ kicker Cole Haskew was perfect on extra point attempts, and the offensive line of Michael Hennessy, Michael Miller, Matt Lupkovich, Grant Havell, Brayden Harrison, and Wyatt Vreeland was dominant up front.

The Wildcat defense was led by captains Michael Miller (eight tackles and one assist), Aidan Corbalis (six tackles), Grant Havell (four tackles, four assists, one interception and a blocked kick), Aaron Callender, and Wyatt Vreeland, who blocked a punt and returned it 49 yards for a touchdown. Matt Abel, Luca Siebert, Kevin Ginley, and Colton Senius were outstanding in the secondary, slowing down a dangerous Goshen passing attack.

The Wildcats were ranked 19th in New York State by the New York State Sports Writers Association prior to Saturday’s win over Goshen, and improved to 3-0 on the season. This weekend, the Wildcats travel to Poughkeepsie on Friday night, September 27, to take on Class A finalists Our Lady of Lourdes. Warwick defeated Lourdes in their 2023 match-up, highlighted by a 70-yard touchdown reception by Dylan Sullivan.

BOYS SOCCER

Zeke Torres scored twice to pace Warwick over Pine Bush 4-0 on Sept. 20. Dylan Gjertsen made nine saves in the shutout. Ronan Bradly and Symon Roldan also scored goals for the Wildcats.

Warwick defeated Valley Central 3-2 on Sept. 18. Roldan, Joel Andoh and Tony Gringaluna had goals for the Wildcats. Gjertsen made eight saves.

GIRLS SOCCER

Warwick and Goshen battled to a 0-0 tie on Sept. 19. Alexa Pitiger had 17 saves for the Wildcats. Warwick defeated Cornwall 9-1 on Sept. 17.

GIRLS TENNIS

Warwick recorded 7-0 victories over Beacon and Monticello to run their record to 5-0 on the season.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

The Wildcats traveled to Beat Mountain State Park to compete in the Suffern Invitational on Sept. 21.  The boys yet again had their best meet of the season to date, placing 11th out of 70 schools in the overall merge.  The Purple Wave was led by top freshman in New York State Leo Shostal in 15:59, RJ Dovico 17:33, AJ Kobrick in a huge breakout race in 17:39. Senior co-captains Liam Astbury and Collin Freet rounded out the top five in 17:55 and 18:10 respectively over the challenging 3-mile course.  The team is next in action on Tuesday September 24th at Sanfordville when they play host to Cornwall and Monroe-Woodbury.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Senior Captain Alyssa Dovico ran a personal best time of 18:50 to lead the Wildcats to a third-place finish at the Suffern Invitational.  Not too far behind was Madison Olszewski who ran 20:12.3, and Julia Schlesinger who finished in 20:18.0.  The girls finished seventh out of 57 teams on the merge results.

Next up for the Lady Cats is a home tri-meet against Section 9 powerhouse programs Cornwall, and Monroe Woodbury.  The meet will be held on Sept.24 at approximately 4:30 p.m.

GIRLS SWIMMING

The girls swim team defeated Minisink 104-78 on Sept. 19 for their first win of the season. Wildcat swimmers achieved 12 personal bests and 4 season bests during the meet.

Ciara Kelly finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke and was second in the 50 freestyle.  Addison Kleveno won the 100 backstroke and was third in the 50 free, and Jillan Shaw was first in the 200 individual medley.

VOLLEYBALL

Genevieve Boyle had five kills for Warwick in a 25-2, 25-12, 15-13 loss to Minisink Valley on Sept. 20.
