FALL RIVER — ‘Tis the season that keeps on giving.

The new year has arrived but the Christmas celebration continues in Fall River, specifically among its small business community.

Last month, a holiday window display contest was launched by Christopher’s eatery. Owner Christopher Silvia challenged his fellow business owners and managers to spread some extra Christmas magic across the city in December by decking out their storefronts.

Wreaths were hung, trees were trimmed, tinsel was tossed, and festive scenes offered a feast for the eyes and soul at nearly two dozen participating establishments over the holiday season.

But there were a handful that really shined, and five winners were recognized for their efforts to make Fall River merry.

City Councilor Linda Pereira, who assisted with the contest, visited winning businesses during New Year’s week to hand deliver the rewards. Aside from bragging rights, winners received a certificate and split $1,000 in prize money.

Taking top honors was Olivia’s Floral & Gifts, where judges followed the North Star above the nativity scene in their 700 Bedford St. storefront.

In a tie for second place was Ray’s Flower Shop, with its cozy and elegant fireplace scene at 1826 South Main St., and Patenaude Jewelers, 1473 South Main St., which featured enchanting North Pole characters.

TJ’s Music, which adorned its eye-catching South Main storefront with brightly lit wreaths, and Sheri’s Place at 13 North Main St., which featured a classic Peanuts-themed wintry scene, tied for third.

According to Pereira, five individuals from the community were selected from different ends of the city to be judges. Winners were chosen based on their creativity. Olivia’s received $500 for first place, second place winners each received $150 and third place each received $100.

Prize money was donated by Rico Conforti of BayCoast Bank, Mayor Paul Coogan, Christopher‘s, Attorney Rena Brown, and others who wish to remain anonymous.

Businesses could enter themselves into the contest, however, most nominations came from customers or passerby wowed by their impressive displays, she said.

“They were amazed that people paid attention to their displays … it was very nice,” Pereira said of finalists’ reactions to their win.

“Hopefully, we can continue to do different things like that and get people involved in doing something positive for the community,” Pereira added.
