Basketball isn’t the only winter sport as many high schools in the area have swimming and wrestling programs.

Today, we look at two of those – Zane Trace’s swimming team and Waverly’s wrestling team.

Here is what you need to know about both:

Zane Trace swimming

Last season both the boys’ and girls’ teams finished in the top six at the Southeast Sectional meet. The girls’ team sent six athletes to the district Mmet. The boys’ team sent five swimmers to districts.

Zane Trace competes as an independent team in swimming as there are only three SVC schools sponsoring teams at this time.

Jennifer Johnston and Kim Lashley are the co-coaches, both with nine years of experience.

The girls lost Gabriella Tisi while the boys lost Wyatt Vick and Charley Clyn off of last year’s squads.

The key returners are: Josh Young, a senior, Dawson Skinner, a senior, and Isaac Detty, a junior, who were all district qualifiers. The girls return two district qualifiers in Caitlin DiBenedetto, a senior, and Malia Vick, a junior.

Other key returners are: Kylie Arthur, a junior, Mary Helber, a junior, Keira DiBenedetto, a sophomore, and Summer Cacciatore, a sophomore.

Key newcomers are: Willow Cacciatore, Griffin Stauffer, Brody Scott, Kayden Isaac, and Tate Lombardo.

“Our returning swimmers have demonstrated great leadership in guiding the teamthrough the first three weeks of practice. The addition of six new swimmers in theninth grade will add to our ability to fill races and field multiple relay teams,” Johnson said. “We expect to see tremendous growth and improvement across the board for our swimmers throughout the season and plan to enter the sectional meet on February 8th with the goal of qualifying several team members to districts again this year.”

Waverly wrestling

The boys’ program is coached by Scott Green who has seven years of experience, while the girls are coached by Mindie Young, who also has seven years of experience.

They lost Davey Adkins, a four-year letterman and four-time district qualifier. Adkins was the first wrestler for Waverly to reach 100 wins.

Also gone from last year’s squad is Emma Davis, a three-year letterman and one-time state qualifier.

Coming back for the Tigers is Alex Tolliver, a junior, and three-time district qualifier who won seven tournament championships including the section championship at 215 pounds.

Dallas Downs, a senior, and two-time district qualifier also returns.

Abby Green, a senior, and three-time state qualifier, who won five tournament championships and had a fifth-place finish at state highlights the girls’ team. Green was the first Waverly girl to reach 100 wins.

Ava Robertson, a sophomore, and a state alternate who won two tournament championships also returns.

“We have some returning wrestlers with high expectations. We’re excited to see the kids’ hard work play out over the season,” Green said. “We have a lot of new faces this year and look forward to seeing them grow into the sport.”
