With Wilmington’s summer almost gone, a door to your entertainment options

Speaking as a Wilmington parent, summer is a weird mix of freedom and obligation.

There’s a lot of shuttling the kid back and forth to various camps, not to mention finding activities for him when he’s not in camp. But there’s also a looseness to it, a “what are we going to do today?” that can include everything from beach trips to backyard cookouts. Once school starts, of course, the vibe changes a bit.

As Jim Morrison of The Doors once sang, “Summer’s Almost Gone,” so let’s enjoy it while it lasts. For advice on how to do so, see below.

Weekend weather outlook

It’s looking to be a decent weekend weather-wise, with mild-ish (or at least not scorching) temps, a low chance of rain and sunny-to-partly-cloudy conditions. Get out there and enjoy.

Go | See | Do

In the past, the dog days of August have seen a calm on Wilmington’s entertainment scene before the fall storm of festivals and performances. Those days appear to be gone, though, because this weekend in Wilmington is packed full of fun stuff.

For starters, we’ve got the openings of two classic musicals, a performance by a comic and writer for “Saturday Night Live,” a screening of a classic ’80s movie celebrating its 40th anniversary and the usual collection of concerts by bands of various genres. Link to full list below.

The Dish with Port City Foodies

It’s still summer, in case you haven’t noticed, so there’s still time to try these wine-and-snack pairings devised by Wilmington’s Wine Gal, aka Amanda Leese.

Plus, I teamed up with food writer Allison Ballard on this list of 14 area bars (from dives to high-end cocktail lounges) to try, and Lloyd Singleton has the low-down on a delicious fruit that grows wild in Wilmington.

News you can use

With back-to-school just around the corner, or already here, we’ve got a bit of local history to teach you about some of the oldest schools in the area.

Plus, a bed and breakfast in downtown Wilmington makes a list of the nation’s best, and a darkly comic crime thriller that shot in Southport drops a trailer and will be in theaters later this summer.
