On 23 September 2024, European ultra-low-cost carrier Wizz Air announced the launch of a first-of-its-kind online shopping platform, one designed to elevate the passenger experience by offering a personalized experience. The program, which has been dubbed WIZZ SHOP&FLY, provides passengers with individualized shopping recommendations and will become the first airline to offer such an experience.

The airline has partnered with online shopping startup InterLnkd, which leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to create a personalized shopping experience through its fully integrated online store. Across the platform, customers are free to explore a variety of fashion, beauty, and retail brands and make purchases that will be delivered directly to their homes.

For a budget airline like Wizz Air, the platform could prove an incredible opportunity to unlock new revenue streams, something that low-cost carriers are always trying to discover. For the online platform InterLnkd, the new partnership will allow their website to access a new customer demographic, as Wizz Air flies millions of passengers around the continent and beyond each month.

An innovative platform

The platform offered by InterLnkd is undeniably innovative. As the company claims on its website, it is the first of its kind to connect travel and hospitality companies to fashion and beauty retailers. As a result, companies like Wizz Air will be able to raise auxiliary revenues, while the latter can employ a new kind of sales strategy.

This new online shopping mall will use an AI solution system to analyze customers’ previous shopping habits and the destinations they will be flying to with Wizz and create a list of personalized products. For example, passengers who may be flying with Wizz to the south of France may see advertisements on the platform for beachwear and other warm-weather products, accessing unique items and prices they may not have otherwise found.

Wizz Air customers can benefit from such a luxury shopping experience without leaving the comfort of their own homes. Additionally, the platform will provide an AI-supported network for acquiring items that will ensure customers will be fully prepared for their holiday adventures.

All of these airports have joined its network in 2023.

The airline’s leadership team is undeniably excited by today’s announcement. In a statement to Simple Flying, the carrier’s media spokesperson had the following words to share:

“We are thrilled to launch WIZZ SHOP&FLY for our UK customers as the very first airline in the world to offer this service. With a completely personalized shopping experience, we’re pleased to be able to offer our customers tailored products which they can use to prepare ahead of their trips and elevate their shopping and travel experiences even further.”

Among other initiatives

The new WIZZ SHOP&FLY platform is among a number of other unique initiatives deployed by the carrier within the past few months to help drive auxiliary revenue. While some budget airlines like Ryanair attempt to drive as much revenue as possible from the inflight experience (they even sell lottery tickets onboard some flights), Wizz Air attempts to unlock other revenue streams.

Earlier this spring, the company launched a clearance promotion for certain products to celebrate the carrier’s upcoming 20-year anniversary. Recently, the airline also honored its 90 millionth passenger with a surprise £200 travel voucher. Additionally, Wizz Air offered a “mystery flight” from London in March, taking passengers to an unknown destination where a pre-planned holiday awaited them.
