Women’s Basketball Continues Travel as Bluejays Face Northern Iowa on Saturday – Creighton University Athletics

Omaha, Neb. — Creighton Women’s Basketball continues its extended stretch of six games away from home with a trip to Cedar Falls on Saturday, December 7 to face former Bluejay Tanya Warren and the Northern Iowa Panthers at 2:00 p.m. in a game available on ESPN+.

About Northern Iowa

  • Located in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
  • Last season, the Panthers closed 2023-24 with a 16-16 record, their season-ending game coming with a 68-64 loss to Saint Louis in the first round of the WNIT.
  • The Panthers were picked to finish second in the MVC Preseason poll.
  • Entering her 18th year as Northern Iowa’s head coach, Tanya Warren also heads into the matchup on Saturday as a former Bluejay herself.
  • Warren played guard from 1983-88 in her time at Creighton and was inducted into the CU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996. Her No. 10 jersey is just one of two jerseys retired in school history.

Scouting Northern Iowa (4-3)
The Panthers have had some significant wins in the non-conference season, including an 87-75 home win over #8 Iowa State (Nov. 20) and a 71-56 road win over Green Bay (Nov. 9). Northern Iowa, however, also has dropped games to Ball State, Auburn and Kansas.
Northern Iowa’s Maya McDermott and Kayba Laube lead the offense for the Panthers with a combined 40.4 ppg. The Panthers average 79.1 ppg and are allowing 68.3.

Saturday’s battle with the Bluejays will be the first game for Northern Iowa since a three game stretch in the Virgin Islands.



Scouting Creighton (6-2)


After the road loss to #10 Kansas State on Nov. 14, Creighton turned the page with a five game win streak. Over the last four games the Bluejays have been particularly effective, posting four straight victories of 20 points or more.

Creighton’s offense has reached 80 points or more all six wins, while falling with outputs of 71 and 68.  

Lauren Jensen and Morgan Maly have guided the Creighton offense, averaging 37.8 ppg.

Defensively the Bluejays have gotten progressively better, limiting the last three opponents to less than 60 points.  

Flanery versus Warren

Once a member of Jim Flanery‘s staff, Tanya Warren was on the Bluejay bench with Flanery for three seasons from 2004-05 to 2006-07. Since she took over Northern Iowa at the onset of the 2007-08 campaign, Creighton and UNI have faced off 25 times. Flanery and the Bluejays hold 17 wins to eight losses.

Bluejays Collect 22nd Consecutive Win With 20+ Assists

Creighton dished out 23 assists in the Bluejays’ 82-54 win at Xavier on December 4. It was the 22nd consecutive time the Bluejays have come away with a victory when boasting 20 or more assists in a game. The last time the Bluejays fell short when dishing 20 assists in a game was on January 4, 2023 against Providence.

Bluejays Move to 90-6 in Games Shooting 50% or Higher

Creighton has topped the 50 percent mark in three of the last four games, vs. Wichita State, vs. Syracuse and at Xavier. The three victories moved the Bluejays to 90-6 in games under head coach Jim Flanery when Creighton shot 50.0 percent from the field. The last time the Bluejays dropped a game shooting that well was to South Dakota on December 16, 2021, a string of 27 consecutive games.

Bluejay Defense Has Been Stifling

Over the last three games, Creighton has limited opponents to a combined 172 points. The Bluejays have three consecutive teams to under 60 points. The last time Creighton held an opponent to less than 60 in four straight games was in February of 2017 from Feb. 3 (at Villanova) through Feb. 17 at home against Seton Hall.

Mallory Brake Feels Right at Home in the Cintas Center

For the second time in two seasons senior Mallory Brake torced Xavier for a career-high 17 points, doing so first on Feb. 6, 2024, then again on Dec. 4. In each game the Minnesota native connected on one three-pointer, giving her two of her eight career treys at the venue.
