Women’s sports fans celebrating NWSL decision for championship game at CPKC Stadium

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – The sentiments are shared that it’s exciting and very important for women’s sports that the NWSL Championship match in November will be played inside CPKC Stadium in Kansas City.

Patricia Iorg is in town visiting family as she currently lives in northern California. She grew up in the Springfield, Missouri area and was exploring the city and the River Market Wednesday morning alongside family members.

They all shared how the news is exciting to hear, but also the significance this has on previous, current, and new generations of women’s sports fans.

“Women’s sports is getting the prominence it deserves and that the women athletes are being treated, or now being seen, as equal to the men athletes. I think that’s great not only for them, but for little girls growing up,” she said. “Women who’ve supported them all along. I think it’s a great thing.”

NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman wrote, “CPKC Stadium epitomizes the explosive growth and investment we are witnessing in the NWSL, women’s soccer and women’s sports around the world.”

That rang true when we asking people for their first reactions.

“It’s really exciting. Bringing more attention around here and more women’s sports – I like it,” said Tracey Andreasen, who was also exploring the River Market area with family.

Berman continued her writing saying, “It was a natural choice to stage the league’s marquee event in a venue that exemplifies the profound impact of infrastructure, investment and community support on the continued development and success of our sport.”

Iorg also shared it’s a flex for her back home in northern California because she believes people don’t really think much about middle-America there. What we’re doing, how we’re doing it, who the leaders are. So, this investment from the NWSL is important to show the country what’s happening on the riverfront.
