World of Warcraft Temporarily Removing Limitation on Character Service

Key Takeaways

  • Until October 15, WoW players can restore deleted characters without a cooldown.
  • Deleted toons will be re-added to the player’s roster of alts using the Restore Character feature.
  • If over 65 characters are on the account, the Restore Character option disappears.

From now until October 15, World of Warcraft players can use the character restoration service without the seven-day cooldown. For a limited time, World of Warcraft fans can restore as many deleted characters as they want, provided the toons are eligible, and they have room on their account.

The Restore Character feature allows fans to un-delete qualifying characters, re-adding them to their roster of alts. To prepare for Warbands in The War Within, World of Warcraft disabled this feature in July, though it quietly brought it back in September after the expansion’s release.

Now, World of Warcraft has officially announced the character restoration service’s triumphant return – and with a limited-time bonus as well. Normally, when a World of Warcraft account restores a character, they must wait seven days in order to do so again. However, to help players who need to restore multiple characters from the last few months, World of Warcraft is temporarily removing this cooldown. Until the seven-day cooldown is reinstated on October 15, fans can freely restore eligible characters as long as they have room on their account.

How Character Restoration Works in World of Warcraft

  • The Restore Character button, found next to Create a New Character on the login screen, can be used to bring back deleted toons once every seven days.
    • From now until October 15, players can freely restore eligible characters without the seven-day cooldown.
  • Certain conditions may disqualify characters for this feature:
    • Under level 10 or on a Class Trial
    • An Allied Race or Hero class at their starting level
    • 90 days after deletion if between levels 10 and 29
    • 120 days after deletion if between levels 30 and 49
  • If a fan already has 65 characters on their WoW account, the Restore Character button will disappear.
  • Players may need to rename the restored character if their original name was taken between their deletion and restoration.

Characters who were deleted during the time when the Restore Character button was deactivated can be eligible for restoration. Fans who have more than one such character to restore may want to consider getting them all back now before the cooldown returns.

There may be some significance to the October 15 date for reinstituting this cooldown, however. On the World of Warcraft Public Test Realm, WoW’s 20th anniversary event is currently scheduled to begin on October 22. It is not uncommon for major events to begin one week after their respective patches launch – and the anniversary is one of the headlining features of Patch 7.0.5. With that in mind, it is possible the new content update could arrive alongside the Restore Character cooldown on October 15.
