World War II era B-29 Superfortress makes stop in Springfield for hands-on history lessons

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – A World War II-era B-29 Superfortress plane is visiting the Ozarks all weekend.

The plane named “Doc” is one of 1,644 B-29s built by Boeing during World War II. It is now one of the last two still flying. It took crews 16 years to fully restore Doc to fly again.

“So we bring the airplane out, we want people to crawl inside a piece of our nation’s history, learn about the technology of the 1940s that was part of this generation of aviation,” said Joss Wells, the executive director of the plane.

Weather permitting, flight tours will continue on Sunday at 9 a.m. & 11 a.m., with ground and cockpit tours going from 12:30 p.m. – 4 p.m.

“It’s important that we continue to make sure that these warbirds fly, they continue to tell the story of previous generations and the greatest generation, and we do that through hands-on learning and aviation,” said Wells.
