World War II-era bomb found in Aurora neighborhood
Construction crews found a World War II-era bomb in an Aurora neighborhood built on the grounds of a former weapons training site on Monday.
The Arapahoe County Bomb Squad responded to the 4600 block of S. Robertsdale Way on Monday after a construction company found a military ordinance, the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office said in a post on X.
The area is part of the former Lowry Bombing and Gunnery Range, a 100-square-mile military training site that was used for weapons and bombing training from 1938 to 1963.
The neighborhood where the bomb was found is just south of the Aurora Reservoir.
Bomb technicians x-rayed the device, a Mark 23 Mod 1 training round, and found it was inert. It was turned over to military officials from Buckley Space Force Base, according to the sheriff’s office.
