World War II soldier to be buried in Denver

DENVER (KKTV) – The remains of U.S Army Staff Sgt. Harold A. Schafer will be buried on July 29 at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.

Schafer was killed in action during World War II while engaged in battle with German forces north of Dillingen, Germany on Dec. 10, 1944. He was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division.

He was a native of Denver and 28 years old when he was killed.

On Sept. 26, 2023, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency accounted for Schafer, after his remains were exhumed in 2021 from the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, France.

His name was recorded on the Walls of Missing at Lorraine American Cemetery in France. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency said a rosette would be placed next to his name, indicating that he had been accounted for.

The U.S. Army Human Resources Command explained that their process begins with locating a closely related family member of the soldier and requesting Family reference samples or DNA to identify the remains. Once identified, the PRCB briefs the family about historical, forensic and DNA reports including the mortuary process.

He will be buried with full military honors.
