World War II veteran celebrates 100th birthday in Monroe
MONROE, La. (KNOE) – A World War II veteran in Monroe turned 100 years old on Thursday, Jan. 2 surrounded by family.
Henry Garner served during World War II in the U.S. Air Force from 1943 to 1946 and was stationed in Guam. Garner says this is a birthday he won’t forget, and he’s most grateful for his family on his 100th birthday.
“They’re always where they need to be. They’re always where they need to be. They seem to be able to, I guess, predict what’s happening and what will happen and they’re always there to be the biggest part of it,” said Garner.
Garner is a retired dean from the education department and graduate school of Northeast Louisiana University at the time, now known as ULM. He said he wants current ULM students to understand that these are important times for them.
“They need to do the best thing that they can for the things around them and help others, help others,” said Garner.
Garner’s children described him as the best daddy and the best example of humble leadership.
