World’s only Pawnseum located in the heart of Rapid City

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) – Pawn shops date back to at least three thousand years ago, according to the National Pawnbrokers Association, and in 2023 there were more than eight thousand Pawn Shops nationwide.

Presidential Pawn located in downtown Rapid City has been family-owned for three generations.

“It’s a lot of fun, you never know what’s going to walk through the door, you never really know where the day is going to take you. I think that’s the refreshing thing, that it’s not very repetitive,” Trevor Johnson, owner of Presidental Pawn said.

Originally starting as a clock and jewelry shop in 1986, more than two decades later the store would evolve.

“We kind of evolved into a pawn shop around 2010 to 2011 during the recession,” Johnson continued.

Pawn shops are typically known to buy and sell a range of items, but Presidental Pawn takes a different approach.

“I think we’re unique because we don’t do a lot of tools and electronics. We like locally historic items, we like jewelry, firearms, and high-end watches,” Johnson concluded.

Although this shop does sell more high-end items, they are also the World’s only Pawnseum.

In the museum portion of the store, you can look at Michael Jackson’s concert glove, Friendship 7′s Periscope Lens, and an Icebox Nugget.
