WRIC NOW: Introducing Nolan Knight, the new Sports Director at 8News
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Stormtracker8 Meteorologist Matt DiNardo sat down with 8News Sports Director Nolan Knight in the WRIC NOW livestreaming studio to discuss the exciting future of sports on Channel 8.
Knight, a Virginian native, talked about how his passion for sports began at an early age.
“I remember as a kid, doing play-by-play while I was doing Madden or NCAA Football on the PlayStation 2,” he said. “I think it just comes down to me loving sports. I was a three-sport athlete in high school and every opportunity to play something, I did — volleyball, football, basketball, soccer and track — I did all of those over my four years.”
Before joining 8News, Knight was the Sports Director at WAAY in Huntsville Alabama where he covered the Alabama Crimson Tide and Auburn Tigers extensively. During his time at WAAY Knight received recognition from the Alabama Broadcasting Association for his high school football show “Big Game Friday Night.”
When asked what he was looking forward to covering at 8News, Knight said he was excited to be back in Virginia with the teams he grew up with.
“Obviously, high school football season is right around the corner,” Knight said. “You know, being a Virginia guy, I’m familiar with these high schools already, which I’m really excited about. I know these names, I’ve played against these schools before, and so it’s pretty cool to come back to Virginia and recognize some names and some coaches and I already have some connections here in Richmond.”
In addition to high school sports, Knight expressed his excitement for the collegiate level as well.
“Getting to cover VCU basketball, Richmond football is right around the corner, Virginia Union, I mean there’s such great sports here in Richmond — not to mention, you know, Charlottesville and Blacksburg and the big seasons that they’re both expecting to have in what should be a wide-open ACC this year.”
Knight will make his debut at 8News on Monday, June 24, night during the 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. broadcast. Watch more livestream content at the WRIC NOW page.
