Yankees Notes: Latest on Jasson Dominguez, Anthony Rizzo

Jasson Dominguez has been on a tear in Triple-A, making a strong case to be one of the Yankees‘ September call-ups on Sunday.

The 21-year-old entered Friday hitting .370 with two home runs, two doubles and six RBI in his last 13 games and has posted a .804 OPS in 34 Triple-A games this season, although Yankees manager Aaron Boone would not commit to calling him up just yet when rosters expand from 26 to 28 on Sept. 1.

“He’s definitely a name in consideration,” Boone said prior to Friday’s game against the Cardinals. “We’ll see. We haven’t made that decision, so I don’t know.”

The Yankees already summoned him once earlier this month, as their extra man for the Little League Classic against the Tigers, although he went 0-for-4 with a costly defensive miscue in extra innings in a 3-2 loss.

Dominguez played eight games last season, hitting four home runs before needing season-ending Tommy John surgery. He also missed six weeks in the minors this season with an oblique injury.

Anthony Rizzo nears return

The Yankees veteran first baseman’s rehab stint with Double-A Somerset continues on Friday with Rizzo expected to play seven to nine innings.

The 35-year-old, who has been out since mid-June with a forearm fracture, began his rehab assignment earlier this week as a designated hitter before progressing to work in the field. He is 2-for-8 with a home run and four strikeouts in four games with Somerset.

Boone suggested on Friday that Rizzo could also be added to the roster on Sunday as one of the team’s September call-ups, which would prevent them from needing to make a move to bring him back up.

…While Rizzo could be called up on Sunday, infielder Jon Berti will not be among those possibilities. Berti, who is recovering from a calf strain, will continue to play in minor league games through the weekend and a “handful of games next week,” per Boone.
