YMCA celebrates grand opening of downtown South Bend fitness center
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – The “Y” is back in the heart of downtown South Bend.
Back in April, the city approved the transfer of what was once Beacon Health & Fitness at the Memorial Leighton Healthplex over to the YMCA.
On Thursday, those plans became a reality, as the YMCA hosted its official ribbon cutting. More than 150 people attended the ribbon cutting, including South Bend Mayor James Muller and Mark Weber, CEO of the YMCA of Greater Michiana.
At the new gym located on 111 W. Jefferson Boulevard, you’ll find group exercise classes, a lap pool, a therapy pool and whirlpool, cardio and strength equipment, and much more. The new facility is located just a block away from where its community presence began in 1907.
The “Y” says moving in is the first phase. Next comes minor repairs and other fun perks for members.
“One of the things we’re exploring is the development of a daycare center in this building so that working families downtown have a place to drop off their kids, and what better to have the kids near where they work, so maybe during lunch time they pick up their kids and go have lunch with them,” Weber said. “So, those are one of the processes that we are working with the city on to bring to the community within the next year and a half.”
Right now, if you use promo code “YMCA” you can have your join fee waived on their website.
