York Co. popcorn business under new ownership

WRIGHTSVILLE, Pa. (WHTM) — A locally owned gourmet popcorn business in York County was recently taken over by a new family.

Half Nuts Popcorn Co. first came to the Midstate about 10 years ago, when former owners Gina Frey-Jones and her husband Tim unveiled their gourmet popcorn business out of a small ‘She Shed’ in Wrightsville.

At the end of 2023, the decade-old popcorn business was sold and taken over by South York County natives Lori Cappello and her husband Jason. The Cappello’s are the owners of River Rock Provisions, LLC, which is now home to Half Nuts Popcorn Co.

According to Lori, she and her husband used to ride their motorcycles along the Susquehanna River in York County; each time passing by the small Half Nuts Popcorn shop. After conversations with the original owners, Lori decided to put her corporate career to the side and dive headfirst into the popcorn business.

“Honestly, I had a long corporate career and I just wanted a change,” Lori explained. “[Half Nuts Popcorn] was such a family-friendly environment! I always saw people walking out of the shop with smiles on their faces and I just decided that I wanted something like that in my life.”

After acquiring the business, the Cappellos opened a new Half Nuts Popcorn Co. shop back on Saturday, June 1 at 498 South Front Street, which is right down the road from the original storefront.

Currently, Half Nuts Popcorn Co. offers about 30 different flavors of gourmet popcorn, which includes flavors like Blueberry Popcorn, Birthday Cake Popcorn, Cheddar Popcorn, PB&J Popcorn, and a lot more.

Moving forward, Lori says that they plan on growing their offerings to include slushies, sorbet, and ice cream.

The hours of operation for the newly opened Half Nuts Popcorn Co. location are:

  • Wednesdays – Fridays // 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Saturdays // 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Sundays // 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

It is important to note that online orders are currently offline, but you can still call the shop at (717) 472-1698 to place an order for shipping.
