YouTube Shorts will soon be up to 3 minutes long

To date, Shorts have been 60 seconds or shorter, but YouTube is extending the max duration to 3 minutes starting October 15.

This applies to “videos that are square or taller in aspect ratio.” There won’t’ be any changes to videos uploaded before that date. Google says this was a “top requested feature by creators.”

In the coming months, YouTube will “improve recommendations for longer Shorts.” There is now a country-specific “Trends” page at the top of a paused Short. The Shorts player will soon also surface comments directly “before you jump into the comments feed.”

Similarly, YouTube showed off updates to the Shorts player to “streamline its look.” Buttons are no longer filled in and just outlines, while there’s just one line for the description. We’re not seeing this change yet.

Meanwhile, YouTube will be providing a “Show fewer Shorts” option in the Home feed, though it’s only temporary.

You can choose this setting by clicking on the three dot menu in the upper right of any Shorts grid in your Home feed and we’ll temporarily show you fewer Shorts in your Home feed.

Lastly, Creators will soon benefit from:

  • “In the coming months, you’ll be able to tap into the vast universe of YouTube content right from your Shorts camera, making it easier to remix clips from your favorite videos, music videos, and more. You’ll even be able to pull from multiple clips across YouTube.”
  • “Now you can easily recreate the magic with templates! Jump on the latest trends, match your clips to the hottest sounds, and add your own unique flair. You can try templates by tapping “Remix” on a Short that inspires you and select “Use this template” to give your own spin.”
